Ways to affirm trans youth. 5, engage in affirming activities together. If a young person comes out and hopes to explore more typically feminine or masculine-coded activities, it can be so powerful to invite them to engage with you in affirming activities such as attending sporting events or getting a pedicure together. Just watch that you’re not forcing your idea of gender roles on them. Ways to affirm trans youth. 6, connect them to community and stories. When you’re a young trans person, transition may feel like light-years away. Seeing stories of and speaking with trans people who are living an affirmed life will provide young people with hope and excitement for their future. It’s also so important for young people to connect to others their age with similar lived experiences. Ways to affirm trans youth. 7, put their needs before your comfort. If your young person would like you to, it can be helpful for safe adults to help them advocate for their identity. This could look like: helping to share with extended family and friends when they’re ready, checking in with schools, businesses and authority figures about their affirming practices, calling out misgendering, and standing up for them if friends or family react negatively to their affirmed identity. Ways to affirm trans youth. 8, Say I love you (for parents and relatives). If you’re a parent or relative, say I love you often. Even when you’re struggling to understand them. Expressing your connectedness verbally is one of the most life-affirming ways we can engage with young folks. If I love you is inappropriate, find another way to express their value and worth in your world!

Ways to affirm trans youth. 1, Use Their Affirmed Name and Pronouns. Work at this, no matter how awkward or difficult it may feel. It is the right thing to do because it tells them you see and accept them for who they are, which is life-changing. It’s normal to make mistakes, in which case quick correction is all that is needed to help your brain rewire. Ways to affirm trans youth. 2, they are still the same kiddo. Being a young person is about so much more than gender and bodies. Some kiddos want to talk about their transition, some don’t. Follow their lead and remember, they’re still the same person with their likes, dislikes, interests, talents and hobbies — now they’ve just let you in on a new part of them. Ways to affirm trans youth. 3, don’t make it about you. As an ally to transgender people, it’s important that cisgender adults do their own internal work around gender rather than putting their own feelings and biases on trans people, especially youth. It’s important not to make trans people have to explain “Gender 101” to you when reputable resources and helping professionals exist. Ways to affirm trans youth. 4, celebrate trans joy. Despite all the challenges trans youth may face, it isn’t helpful to only focus on the hard stuff. The trans experience includes strong communities and spaces of resilience and pride, gender euphoria, bravery, creativity and the exploration of self, all incredible things worthy of celebration.
