Skomer is now closed!

25,339 of you visited the island this year - our busiest ever year.

Please be assured that we monitor our visitor numbers carefully to ensure that visitors do not negatively affect our wildlife.

We thank you for continuing to support our work.

Our webcam Manx Shearwater has now fledged - it is now on its way to Argentina.

A few weeks ago, researchers from OxNav research group ringed the burrow chick (under license) as part of ongoing Manx Shearwater work on the island.

We kicked off our events schedule this week with a fantastic few days in partnership with @officialblack2nature, with 14 young people joining us for three nights.

We're so proud of everything they learnt and for throwing themselves so enthusiastically into the events.
The group all gathered in front of the ruined farmhouse. Ceris, our Assistant Warden, takes a selfie with 5 others. The sea is behind them. Anna, our long-term volunteer, shows three people something in a bucket on the beach. Two staff members pack bracken into Skomer Vole traps with two participants.

What to see on Skomer in August 🐦🐬🦋

The majority of Puffins have now left the island but there are plenty of other species to look out for on your visit - from amazing marine mammals to stunning seabirds and beautiful butterflies.
A photo of a Fulmar in flight with the text 'Look out for these stunning seabirds flying around the coast with straight, stiff wings. Keep an eye out for their fluffy, grey chicks on cliff ledges at the Wick, before they fledge at the end of the month.' A photo of a large group of Grey Seals hauled out on a pebble beach. The text reads 'As seal pup season gets underway, look out for females hauled out with their small, white pups on beaches and rocks around the island. Keep an eye out for seals swimming in the waters around Skomer too.' A Painted Landy butterfly on a yellow flower. Text reads 'Look out for these beautiful orange butterflies feeding on flowers like Ragwort and Fleabane. You might spot a caterpillar feeding on Nettle or Thistles around the island.' A photo of two Risso's Dolphins jumping out the water. Text reads 'We’ve had some recent sightings of Risso’s Dolphins. These large, grey dolphins have blunt heads, sickle shaped dorsal fins and white scars on their bodies. If you’re lucky, you might spot a couple around the coast.'

Monday was Skomer Pride, a wonderful celebration of the LGBTQ+ community - Skomer is proud to be a safe, accepting place for all staff, volunteers and visitors.

We champion your right to be your true self. Alongside wildlife content, our social media will always showcase this.

Happy Pride Month to all who celebrate! Everyone is welcome on Skomer - diversity and inclusion are a cornerstone of what we do.

To celebrate, we've cross-referenced our breeding bird species with birds displaying homosexual behaviour (Bagemihl, 1999) to produce a Skomer Gay Bird Checklist.

It reads 'Skomer's Gay Bird Checklist: The following checklist includes our breeding species that cross-reference with the list of birds displaying homosexual behaviour (Bagemihl, 1999). Kittiwake, Shelduck, Razorbill, Jackdaw, Guillemot, Shag, Raven'. There are pictures of each bird and an outline of Skomer filled in with a Progress Pride flag.
