🧵 In 2025, book censorship in the United States is rampant and common. Never before in the life of any living American have so many books been systematically removed from school libraries across the country.

PEN America has a new report out on banned books, and LAST NIGHT AT THE TELEGRAPH CLUB was the fourth most banned book in the 2024-25 school year. This actually surprised me, but I think it's partly because all the usual suspects have already been banned. When books get banned, they don't return.
penamerica.bsky.social
This 2024-25 school year, book bans affected 3,752 unique titles in 87 school districts nationwide. Some types of books are targeted for removal because of their content; but the climate of censorship that has spread in schools has impacted a wide array of titles written for all sorts of audiences.
Infographic showing the most banned books of the 2024-2025 school year by number of school districts, according to PEN America. The top books listed are 'A Clockwork Orange,' 'Sold,' 'Breathless,' 'Last Night at the Telegraph Club,' 'A Court of Mist and Fury,' 'Crank,' 'Forever,' 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower,' and 'Wicked' with their respective bans ranging from 20 to 17 districts. Includes book cover images and data from PEN America Index of School Book Bans, dated July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025.

Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries are prepared to roll over to avoid a shutdown. That cannot happen, because it is exactly what Trump wants. Now is the time to fight. Call their offices and tell them.

This is absolutely true. If the NYT covered this the way they covered trans care, you all would finally understand what dangerous shit their trans care coverage has been.

i have to say, as a trans journalist who has covered the "trans debate" for about a decade now, there is no daylight between how the trump administration and conservatives lie about tylenol and autism and how they've lied about youth trans care.

Some takeaways from ABC/Disney backtracking on Kimmel:
1) Corps only care about $$
SCOTUS says money is speech. So use your voice! Boycotts work. Collective action works!
2) A huge amount of energy went into helping Kimmel. We need that same energy for book bans & attacks on marginalized creators.
