For the first time the world is generating more electricity from nuclear fusion than fission! Now we just need nuclear (both direct and indirect) to surpass fossil fuels.

This is really an incredible article. Both nuanced and blunt at the same time.
Must read on how, exactly, the Republicans are weaponizing the state, and what you need to do to oppose them, by Steven Levitsky, author of "How Democracies Die," and @lucanway.bsky.social. Could not recommend more.

One under-appreciated, under-discussed explanation for Trump winning is simply that the people who voted for him believed a wide array of false things. The mainstream commentariat's refusal to center information rot has led to much confusion.

Highly recommend this piece from @karlbode.com:
America’s Right-Wing Propaganda Problem Might Be Terminal | Dame Magazine
America’s descent into mass delusion isn’t happenstance. The demise of courageous journalism isn’t a happy accident. Its replacement with engagement-chasing infotainment and propaganda isn’t an error....

I've legitimately thought the smell of cilantro matched that of stinkbugs for over a decade now, this is so validating
Coriander or 'cilantro' (Coriandrum sativum) is a divisive topic.

For about 14% of the US population, it tastes like soap, stinkbugs, or rotten produce.

For the other 86%, it's a delightful addition to a wide variety of recipes, used to craft flavors in gin, beer, sausages, curries and pickles.

We really need affordable clean firm power asap. Or go build data centers in the desert with a bunch of colocated solar + storage
The more likely form of grid defection for data centers increasingly appears to be behind-the-meter gas generation. A must-read by @ariellesamuel.bsky.social: 🔌💡 heated.world/p/ai-is-guzz...

Renewables were 82% of new US generating capacity in September and 90% in first three-quarters of 2024.

Solar was 76% of new US capacity in September and 78% during the first nine months of 2024.

Solar plus wind are now more than 21% of US generating capacity; all renewables combined are 30%.

It certainly won't happen over the next four years, but some sort of tax credit or incentive to make solar cost competitive to build on US parking lots should be a no brainer
Did you know that every French parking lot is going to be covered with solar panels? That Indonesia said it will close down its coal plants? That Nest is building a giant 'virtual powerplant' in Texas
There are things to be thankful for, even in Nov 2024

We should want review processes that are
1. Centralized (one big yes/no decision, not dozens);
2. Participatory/engaged (a real chance for views, concerns, ideas to be heard); and
3. Fast (clear time limits on decision; limited, fast appeal).
This is the way forward for energy infrastructure IMO
