Garry Kasparov has often said about dictators that they “always lie about what they’ve done, but are often quite plain about what they want to do.” Of course, our authoritarian is not a dictator at present, but the point applies to him too.

I think more the former than the latter, plus something about coalitions. It is more comfortable to be divide people up into simple types. An X, Y, ~Z person breaks the universe in a way that ~X, ~Y, ~Z doesn’t. On coalitions, the X, Y, ~Z person might seem disloyal.

Just at a glance, I would expect there’s a decent correlation with racial breakdowns of the respective leagues.
