He sort of explains where he’s coming from with that, in Hillbilly Elegy. His grandparents had explosive tempers and were capable of violence, but they stayed together - and that was the most stability he had, I think. His chamelionism started early, too - sucked up to Mom’s boyfriends for survival

I don't have numbers here, but I would be shocked to find many recent migrants. Per Pew, fewer than a third of Hmong in the US are migrants at all, the rest are US-born, and of the original waves following Vietnam, virtually all have been naturalized by now.
