It's past time for universal health care now.

Someone needs to remind people the president can't unilaterally impose tarrifs just because. Tariffs are a tax and the power of taxation rests in congress.

I’m reminded of my weeping student — on a day with a class visitor.

I think my words were less help than being present, holding space.

She was laughing 10 minutes later.

Grief will come again for her, for all of us. I hope my words were right: there is so much love in the world she’s yet to meet.

I had a hard day a few days ago — the kind that leaves you in a corner.

I was texting with one of my best friends that night, & couldn’t even shape words for an ask.

He knew enough to call, & I sat near-mute, listening to the clink of dishes, shuffle of papers. Somehow that was what calmed me.

I am an English professor. I am an author. I am a professional talker. I am a menace in microblogging (clearly).

But I have lived long enough among words -- and people who do beautiful things with them -- to value actions. Showing up. Touch. Silence. All of messy, awkward, fumbling humanity.
