Identifying who you are is a legitimate requirement, I guess - but what I don't understand is the need for separate registering process before voting: why aren't voting rights simply connected to citizenship in existing registries? I mean, surely the US knows who its citizens are... or?

seems like a discursive triumph of populism: when everyone (both sides, I guess) is preoccupied with attacking some "elite" that supposedly is a danger for "the people", it is hard to join forces for the actual common good: the joint endeavor is to dismantle elites, not to improve society. Or?
