Last month, Rita Hulsman was honored as a Seattle Kraken Hero of the Deep for her advocacy for safer streets. Through her leadership and the One Roof Foundation, SNG received a $32K Kraken Unity Fund gift to support safer walking, biking, and rolling in Seattle. 💙

Rainier Valley Greenways hosted tabling events to keep Lake Washington Blvd safer during Bicycle Weekends—supporting swing gates, traffic calming, and car-free space for everyone to enjoy.

5/🕯️ Honoring Lives Lost on Rainier Ave S

Volunteers organized a memorial and funeral-style public art action to honor people killed or seriously injured in traffic violence.

The street became a place for grief, remembrance, and resolve—and a call for urgent change.

4/🎨 Painting Safety Into the Street: NW Greenwood Homezone

NW Greenways and neighbors painted murals across three intersections—over 240 volunteer hours across two days.

Beautiful and functional: the murals help slow traffic, support safer travel, and build neighborhood pride.

2/🎉 Reconnect Ballard Block Party

More than 2,000 people filled the street for food, music, games, and community at the Reconnect Ballard Block Party.

It celebrated local businesses and hard-won pedestrian safety upgrades on 8th Ave NW.

9/🏫 Sidewalks & School Streets

Thanks to the 2024 Transportation Levy:

✔️ 40% increase in sidewalk construction
✔️ School Streets expanded to 19 schools
✔️ Permanent street closures at Maple & Olympic Hills Elementary

Safer routes to school mean more freedom for kids and families.

8/🚲 NE Seattle Network Expansion

New protected bike lanes and sidewalk improvements opened along 11th & 12th Ave NE, connecting Roosevelt, Ravenna, and the U-District.

This creates safer, more comfortable access to light rail, schools, and business districts.

More than 3.5 miles of new bike routes now connect South Park, Georgetown, SODO, and Downtown.

Together, these projects create a low-stress network in historically underserved neighborhoods—made possible by over 25 years of community advocacy.

6/🏙️ Beacon Hill Safety Project

Nearly 1.7 miles of protected bike lanes, traffic calming, and pedestrian upgrades opened from the Jose Rizal Bridge to Jefferson Park.

This happened because Beacon Hill Safe Streets organized for over a decade—pushing back when projects were cut.

5/🚸 Rainier Ave S & I-90 Ramps

After years of advocacy by Rainier Valley Greenways and Disability Rights WA, raised crosswalks were installed at all four I-90 ramps on Rainier Ave S.

This notoriously dangerous area is now safer—especially ahead of the Judkins Park Link Station opening in 2026.

4/🌊 Downtown Waterfront Trail

Seattle now has a continuous 3.26-mile waterfront trail from Pioneer Square to the Elliott Bay Trail—something that’s never existed before.

Highlights:
🚲 Protected bike lanes on Alaskan Way
🚶 Safer crossings & ADA access
🌿 Direct connections to the Park Promenade
