Soccer was in New Jersey before Brazil
US had a pro league before Italy or Spain

“Let’s do a starting XI of US soccertowns. How hard can it be?”

Thanks, Jurgen. So who should pay for "free" soccer?

US soccer history, for better or worse, is a mirror of the larger American story.

I was talking to someone at San Diego Wave recently about their community outreach. “San Diego is a military town,” they said. “So we work with Armed Services YMCA, which gives food to active duty military and veterans. It’s sad that our military families need a food drive to get by but…”

In six episodes on US soccer history, Kirk has done Russian, Spanish, Italian, German, English, Irish, and Alexis Lalas.

None of them well, but there's got to be credibility points for the effort.

Perhaps the Bay Area can come together against our humble podcast…common enemy, etc.

(Although we give SF and Oakland soccer history plenty of love.)

Sorry, Bay Area: San Francisco and Oakland had to share a spot in our Starting XI.

And sorry (not sorry): we had to talk about the SF Deltas...

Glad to help out with this & see #Atlanta make the starting XI. A hurculean effort by Kirk & Tom who did a great job tracing the metro area’s #soccerhistory & those of other important “soccertowns” across the U.S. (although Tom gets a yellow for the use of “Hotlanta”). Definitely give it a listen!

Patrick, your help was invaluable, and I’m glad we got to tell a bit of the Atlanta story.

And yes, shame on Tom.
