However, once the State backs away from its end of this core compromise, why would we expect unions to continue to hold up their end?

Labor relations theory predicts that the System will break down if the compromise breaks down.

Canadian labor relations System is based on a core compromise:

- Unions will be very tightly regulated, including one of most restrictive strike laws in the world.

BUT

- In exchange, the State will protect a right to strike & force ERs to bargain with "certified" unions.

Recall my point from last week

The % of Canadians working in private sector covered by collective agreements is lower today (15%) than before labor laws that created the System (17% in 1940) were passed.

Canadian unions are right to question whether the System still works. Resistance follows.

#AirCanada returns to bargaining table after it realizes government’s attempt to ban strikes isn’t working.

Tentative deal reached.

Who could have predicted that parties would bargain seriously if strike/lockout threat is real?

Goes without saying that the Liberal’s much hyped law banning replacement workers doesn’t achieve anything if the government prohibits strikes and lockouts.

Sometimes I like to point out obvious things.

As you were.
