i don't argue the initial assertion, but i'm also not someone who believes that introducing ethics into open source licenses is a tractable problem - much as i might personally hope otherwise

i don't disagree, but i think the context is materially different.

a decade ago there were, IMO, a lot more people motivated to advance and protect open source because the absence of it was in memory. now, i look around at events like the OSS Summit and there's a lot of hair the same color as mine.

nothing in particular, just me venting with my common, perennial frustration.

i do think the road ahead is rockier than you, however, given that the success of open source has trained a generation of developers to not care about how open source succeeded or why, and why definitions matter.

...which is why it is so infuriating that the industry is sleep-walking towards a non-binary future in which open source sometimes means open source but sometimes something else entirely and also worse
