1000%

it's edited poorly, and some of the cinematography hasn't aged well, but it's great. the scandi actors in particular are fantastic.

my favorite part of this absolutely golden thread was recalling and contributing some of my mom's - who is a very good cook almost all of the time - truly spectacular failures.
yes, hello, I would like to place an order for everyone’s funniest stories of holiday food-related family grudges / drama / chaotic incidents / lore

I feel like we need this

NINE YEAR OLD: [trivia night] Marco Polo came before Joan of Arc which came before World War I
ME: what? how did you know that?
9YO: alrighty, so if Joan of Arc had been alive when Henry the Eighth was alive, his first wife was Queen Elizabeth’s mother, and she only died recently, so...

here's hoping they end up serving as examples that "i was just following orders" is not, in the end, a viable defense
This is a story about how America’s world-leading cancer and dementia research system was destroyed by frauds and naifs who broke the law.

There must be consequences.
Some incredible details in this piece
*one DOGE faction was planning the future of the US government at a venture capital firm
*illegally communicating on Signal to avoid transparency laws was deeply embedded into organizational culture to be taken for granted

there's an episode of Beavis and Butthead where they buy all of the candy they're supposed to sell using the same two dollars that they loan back and forth to each other.

thinking of that for no reason whatsoever.

there really needs to be a word for this
I’m having that thing where you log on to social and everyone is reacting to the new thing but the reactions are vague, aghast, angry enough that you’re struggling to figure out exactly what the new thing is. German must have a word for this.

i'm the only one in the house, have been for hours and my daughter's ipad in the other room just made some noise, not sure what.

now leaning away from "iOS issue" and towards "haunted."
does anyone else have the issue with iOS devices spontaneously playing media? usually it's my iPad firing up Plex out of nowhere, and just now it was my iPhone suddenly playing a podcast via Pocketcasts.

1. this is the best news all week
2. i don't need to wait on a reduction in snout length, i'll take whatever now
3. it would help immensely if someone could make a highly convincing dog costume for raccoons so that i could trojan horse one into a household that other than me has zero raccoon fans

an underrated hiring strategy is getting smart people and letting them cook
I don't even know what @rstephens.me is talking about here, but co-signed. Rachel and @kateholterhoff.com are both higher order humans. We are so fucking lucky to have them both on our team.
I love moments when I'm reminded how amazing my colleagues are, and right now is a @kateholterhoff.com appreciation moment. She does such great work!

this is why reporting is important.

and yes, before someone asks, i'm aware of the Vance texts to Bezos, the sad state of media today, etc etc etc.

the point stands.
1) @washingtonpost.com reported Thursday on a controversial policy downgrading how nooses and swastikas are labeled in the Coast Guard.

2) Admin officials attacked The Post, falsely alleging the reporting of "fake crap."

3) The CG said it would review policy language.

4) The CG reversed course.

Exclusive: The U.S. Coast Guard will no longer classify the swastika, nooses and the Confederate flag as hate symbols.

The military service drafted a new policy that classifies them as “potentially divisive.”

would be remiss if i didn't note that it was on this date that Abraham Lincoln delivered not only one of the most famous, but one of the best and most inspiring speeches in this country's history.

i think about it far more regularly today than i wish i had to.
In Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, 162 years ago today, President Lincoln gave one of the most famous speeches in American history, extolling the sacrifices of the men who died in the battle there. There are five known manuscript copies of the Gettysburg Address. The Library of Congress has two of those.
