The temple city was closed off and the gates were guarded by a huge statue of their main deity. It was predawn and eerily quiet. The boy was crying softly in my arms and I heard myself mechanically phrase the familiar incantation: „It is with a heavy heart that I lay this child before Thee, my God.“

An old parchment stuck to the door of the hut, the handwriting on it barely legible. The wood was warm to the touch and the air coming through the cracks smelled of freshly baked pie. Three crones stood around a blazing fire — and slowly turned at the creak of rusted hinges. What had the note said?
