Ancient ocean habitats. Magnificent wildlife. Bottom trawling destroys it ALL. 🪸 So it's all the more SHOCKING that 90% of UK marine protected areas remain open to this destruction.

It makes a mockery of the entire meaning of "marine PROTECTED"?! 2/4 🔽

🚨 BREAKING: 20,000+ HOURS of suspected bottom trawling WRECKED the UK’s offshore marine “protected” areas last year, our research shows! 🌊 That would score tracks on the seabed that would stretch EIGHT TIMES around the UK. All with the government's permission! 1/4 🔽

UK's marine protected areas face over 20,000 hours of bottom trawling
Bottom trawling is a fishing method where large, weighted nets are dragged across the seafloor by one or two boats to catch fish and other marine life that live on or near the bottom.

#BigOil may be playing dirty, but the facts are crystal clear. Oil and gas pollutes our seas and wrecks our #marine protected areas. It’s time for government to stop defending unlawful licences and start implementing the ban on all new oil and gas. 8/9 🔽

That’s right - we don’t know how much #pollution is out there, because oil companies aren’t telling us. The map shows an awful picture, but the missing data means it’s even worse. 7/9 🔽

To add insult to injury, our Sea Slick report found that when these permits were breached, and oil companies released more than they’re allowed to, roughly a third of reported incidents didn’t share the volume of oil released into the ocean. 6/9 🔽

Shockingly, it’s even worse than it looks. Our map only exposes the hundreds of spills reported by the industry each year. But they also get permits to pump our #ocean with a byproduct called ‘produced water’, essentially a chemical soup laced with oil . 5/9 🔽

Our live spill map uncovers an awful reality. In the last year alone, #BigOil were responsible for 79 spills in marine protected areas. The largest resulted in 11,170kg of chemicals spewing into a supposedly “protected” ocean haven. With each spill, Big Oil shows it can’t be trusted. 4/9 🔽
