ICE is different. It needs to be abolished because the agency is rogue, and, more pointedly, because it’d be exceedingly difficult to design an agency like ICE that wouldn’t go rogue eventually. If not on its own, then whenever Republicans came to power. Police forces are not established through conscription. Policing is a career field people choose to enter. It attracts people who either want to catch bad guys or wield power over civilians, or perhaps a bit of both. A federal police force that is hypermilitarized, but with jurisdiction limited exclusively to immigration, will never resemble professional law enforcement. It will invariably attract white nationalists, who will both mete out violence against the population and subvert our democratic processes, including by taking actions designed to choose their own bosses.

Carmen de Lavallade brought us so much beauty, color, and grace. According to the National Black Theater, she passed yesterday. What a privilege to be able to introduce my mother to this woman whose art she taught me to love and appreciate.

Text from NYT: Mr. Aceituno, who has lived in Charlotte for 24 years and became a citizen around six years ago, engaged in a playful back-and-forth with the agents, in an effort to provide cover for migrants in the area who may not have had documentation. “You want to take breakfast with me, I’ll pay,” said he told one agent. After 15 minutes of stalling, Mr. Aceituno, who is originally from Honduras, confirmed he was a citizen. The agents let him go. As he settled into his vehicle, another group of Border Patrol agents approached. They banged on his window, he said, demanding he provide documentation. “I got papers,” he said. Then, Mr. Aceituno said an agent broke the driver’s side window of his red Ford pickup and removed him from the truck. He was placed in handcuffs and put inside of a vehicle, where he was detained for about 20 minutes before agents let him go, he said. “It’s terrible,” Mr. Aceituno said.
