I understand that a lot of folks have been misled by fear-mongering and powerful regressive voices but it’s still astonishing to me that so many have fallen for the idea that oppressively policing other people’s gender identity and expression could in any way be part of an enlightened future.

I cannot believe it took me this long to connect Havlock Vetinari, Patrician of Ankh-Morpork with the Doge of Venice. Both absolute rulers who were elected by various guilds etc, both rulers of nation-states that got along via mercantile power rather than military might.

I just remembered the Fritz Lieber novel The Silver Eggheads, and it's stunningly prescient.
Written in 1961 it envisions a future where "writers" put vague ideas into devices called wordmills that then do the actual writing.
