I am a Bosnian displaced prsn currently specialising in child psychology.. Neurodivergent in a few ways. I work with some of the most vulnerable families in London. My research will be exploring what helps non speaking autistic children's families to flourish. I am looking for refugee psychologists.

Anxiety is difuse and essentially unfounded. This is why it needs graded exposure to get better.

Trauma, stress, overwhelm, fear, exhaustion, burnout, reaction to physical body changes/medication etc. are all completely founded and need an entirely different support/treatment.

On anxiety...

When you or someone you look after has a stomach ache, precision is vital to identify the cause, enabling the right help.

Anxiety responds to graded exposure, so asking if more exposure to x situation would ultimately help a person/myself feel better is a vital question. Be precise

Here is an APA link to a definition. www.apa.org/topics/anxie... anxiety is difuse and it doesn't go away when removing x. Fear and stress are appropriate.

Q: WHO decides what is appropriate? WHO decides what is a traumatising experience? WHO gets to decide and WHO doesn't get to decide?

I remain puzzled why trauma response, stress from relentless pressure, physical issues like sensory overwhelm and tiredness, confusion and frustration from not understanding something, social issues due to problems in relationships, WHY are all these called anxiety. 🤔 they are all different states.

Why is the conversation never about making school a pleasant place for children to be?

Creating a school system that children *want* to be present within is the only way to solve the problem of persistent absence

Thanks Jo. It is good to hear there isn't a set way of going about it.

Has anyone got an EP job in spring / summer of y3, or do TEPs really need to look at the start of y3? What is the done thing?

I am catching up with my thesis and focusing on a new placement.

My inner freelancer (15+ yrs) is saying bish bash bosh and my inner EP is being thoughtful & reflective.
soulsoothing.bsky.social
The reason I raise stress or slow trauma is because I wonder if our solutions would be different.
I'm CBT trained & AuDHD. We know for example that graded exposure doesn't work for neurodiverget sensory overwhelm. Children might also be getting retraumatised if solutions ignore social slow trauma?
soulsoothing.bsky.social
Genuine Q..
1. APA defines anxiety = all pervasive, difuse, unfounded fear
2. Graded exposure is the gold standard treatment
3. 6 yrs of my SEMH practice based evidence is that children are overwhelmed

Ergo

EBSNA = HPA axis activation due to stress and slow trauma?

Ergo

New approach needed?

I have kept my autism going with daily paracetamol (for chronic pain normally) 😂😂 apologies for jesting but yes it is polycausal because humans are complex.

I remain throughly astonished at blatant reductionism in a lot autism research and especially interventions. Addressing it in my research.

Educational Psychology Thesis directory. #SEND #parent #carer do search through and read. Often abstract and discussion are enough to get the gist. There is also a directory st BPS, and at British Library. You don't need a permission to be an educated advocate for your child / young adult. SENDmama

Thanks for keeping at this Sean...

I am lost for polite words.

"Human animals" ... then again they called us that too. (See Srebrenica)

Labour have some thinking to do.
soulsoothing.bsky.social
I need to read the article but first thought is that anything which reduces a whole human being to tick boxes is inherently problematic. Behaviourist research on captive animals doesn't even tell us about how animals behave naturally. We know this from "rich environment" studies. As for ethics...

I am a day late but wanted to mark the Orange Shirt Day, remembering 6509 (found so far) Indigenous children murderd in Indian Residential Schools across Turtle Island (North America).

One would be too many.

Genocide is systematic and deliberate.

All children have a right to life. All children

Reading about 252 different possible answers LLMs could give reminded me of podcast bros stating they know what women want, or any time anyone assigning feelings to another person without asking them.

It is a no for me on all 3 counts.

Main Q: who does it serve to use AI sampling?
soulsoothing.bsky.social
#appropriation #balance

If modern/Western psychology has other cultural ideas in it, including Indigenous, then wouldn't it be right for them to be explicitly named?

What would the psychology curricula here in England, at school and uni, look like if Global South theories were included?

OK folks how do you stop yourself going on side quests / learning everything so you can know something? Serious Q.

@autisticphd.com writes about this ❤️ their dolphin theory. Rachel Cullen has concrete language theory, which explains a bit too.

Send help!! Ta.

Hello bsky... I am after # topics above theses or papers that use storytelling and other creative methods in the write up. Looking for inspiration.

Also, I need to clone myself to do the reading.

Thank you.

Thanks Jill for the encouragement 😊 Yes, that is pretty much what I am doing.

Y3 of EdChild Psy Prof doctorate, generous estimate:
78 available days (each Fri, Sat)
10 Thur
+ 35 school hols days
Total = 123
- 15 days for other academic work

Total 108 days to research and write a thesis.

Assumes submitting end of Y3, but most unis have much earlier deadlines.

Couldn't agree more. And how isolating these experiences must be for the children and families.
As a refugee I think our profession needs better supervision and collegiate frameworks. In writing my briefing paper I discovered "slow trauma" and "slow violence" terms. Apt for these experiences
soulsoothing.bsky.social
It was an awful day. I got caught in a group of protesters at Farringdon Train Station. The atmosphere reminded me of pre-genocide Bosnia. I was actually very scared.

Otherwise, I find it super challenging as a TEP that we can't call out all forms of racism as openly as it is necessary.

Peek at a mighty oak in this acorn. It might live centuries, weathering all sorts, providing food, home, & shelter for countless creatures, witnessing changing animal & human societies.
This acorn just needs the right conditions. It knows how to grow.
Children's potential depends on our conditions.
A small oak branch resting on white paper. There are around 7 leaves with jaggedy edges on the branch and a single acorn which is a small egg shaped seed attached to the branch with a semi rounded a kind of a hat.
