I only watched The Tube twice, I think: the first ep out of curiosity and because The Jam were playing live, and one of the Frankie GTH eps a couple of years later. I was totally the target audience but the format and presenters annoyed me. There was never a unifying UK pop TV show that wasn’t ToTP.

Got to the end of the ‘84 playlist finally yesterday. For all that it includes a lot of hits, I think it’s also the most diverse (in terms of the range of genres and styles included). Well done, the nominators. And few clues here as to why US (and UK) pop nosedived off a cliff in ‘85

I think this is the first time I’ve ever heard a Fab 5 Freddy song. Blondie weren’t misrepresenting! The Soul Jazz Keith Haring comp (cf. Spotify playlist) looks super interesting too.

Might give Francky V my bonus, but he has another (better?) song coming up later.

Took me ages to find this post due to adult tag 🙄

I’m staying loyal to Rip Rig, who were my fave band in ‘82 along with A Certain Ratio. YMKoC is their stab at pop and I was sniffy about it at the time for that reason*. Love it now though.

Immense respect to whoever made that string of dub versions of The Beat tunes between 1980 and 1982. They’re all brilliant but ‘Swivel Heads’ is the culmination, completely out there and fortunately not ruined by its use in Ferris f*ckin’ Bueller

PPP wisdom is that Aretha fares badly when it’s not one of her best known songs. That may well hold true here too but both her songs in the tournament are damn funky.

Well, that (‘83 playlist) was a fab listen. Expected the I to M section to grate a bit, but there was only one weak link (and even that had a WTF moment within it). This time the GB contenders came right at the very end.
