It shows the clout of TOTP that Shalamar would fly back home from their American tour, yes

(It is true that EVERYONE in the playground was trying to do these moves though, I had no idea this is where they were from)

Unfortunately I am unable to listen to any of these, because I am unable to stop listening to Moment Of My Life from Day 1

Guys named Jeffrey and Howard = not beating the British allegations
peoples-pop-polls.bsky.social
Oh maybe I thought she was British because she was in famous British band Shalamar then
peoples-pop-polls.bsky.social
No Jody Watley was smooth soul like Shalamar, Imagination and Loose Ends!
peoples-pop-polls.bsky.social
Haha I absolutely did think Jody Watley was. To 10 year old me American Black music was old guys (and women) and electro/rap, don’t think I’d really grasped the idea of Jamaica so I tended to assume reggae acts were from London or Birmingham
peoples-pop-polls.bsky.social
Yeah they were the No 1 choice of the British soul boy and without knowing anything about soul I just assumed they were, something I’ve never really questioned!

Apparently a Brit who liked Shalamar back in the early 80s was known as a Smooth (derogatory then, complimentary now obv)

The idea of a world where "Hot Hot Hot" is a new song makes my brain feel weird.

Sharon Redd and Evelyn "Champagne" King both warm my heart by allowing themselves to indulge in Teena Marie jazzisms, Evelyn going for Teena's high-climbing reaches and swoops, Sharon also for Teena's reaches and for her quick-note vocal fills.

The Randomizer making nobody happy here, I suspect. But so great to see Francis Bebey in a PPP finally (he really should have featured in the 1975 poll) and this may be his best 80s effort. Bonus vote goes to King Sunny Ade’s 📞song meets afrodub-in-space jam.

for years I thought Shalamar were British because of this record, it's totally chicken in a basket
peoples-pop-polls.bsky.social
I thought they were British until I read THIS SKEET 🤯 (for the same reason)

Only in the People's Pop Polls can 13 minutes of minimalist skronking noises go up against a novelty Eddie Murphy rap song (I voted for that menacing Cybertron track though).

It was fantastic hearing “Electric Avenue” in the context of the rest of this playlist—like hearing it for the first time!

“Electric Avenue”: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
“Inside Out”: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
“Forget Me Nots”: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️-
“Play At Your Own Risk”: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

(to think that I barely ever heard PAYOR - it does explain “I.O.U.”)
