My favourite hits radio station has a feature on the breakfast show where listeners are asked to suggest songs relating to a theme of the day. When the theme was “rap”, the suggestions that the DJ read out - with a completely straight face - were: ‘Rapture’, ‘Chant No.1’ and ‘World in Motion’

The end result is that yes, doing a track called something like “Unity Of Man” with bongos on it was indeed seen as essential for the genre

In general there’s just a big upsurge of socially conscious pop post Live Aid in the second half of the 80s, and more marketing of “world music”, then with UK dance music there’s the whole thing around E bringing people together as the love drug
