I had so much fun a couple of decades ago when all the countdowns were one second off because they didn't account for an impending leap second. Then I got to count down out of sync for the last 11 seconds.

I think this actually makes it a better game, mechanically speaking. Two thirds of the win conditions are achievable at any time, and you can pursue those directly throughout the year. But if you make it to December without success, the balance of goals shifts.

I once read a story about a future where "Christmas Season" is ultra commercialized and runs summer through December 25, and a marketing person is confused that his religious friend's family "only celebrates Christmas on the last day".
