Honestly, I think generative AI is the most embarrassing thing to happen to human cognition in the history of human evolution. People jumping at the opportunity to hand over their thinking processes to a machine is like admitting you don't like having and using a brain.

What really irritates me is when my I give my 16-18 y.o. students a very short passage (like 5-8 sentences) with a question about the text and they immediately go to Google to give them an AI generated answer. Like, TF you doing? The answer is right there. They have no reading comprehension.
I know this is an "old man yells at cloud" moment, but compared to the work I was getting a few years ago, my students are producing mush, and their ability to apply facts to new problems is much worse. Even with search engines, you had to actually process the info. I want out.

Thinking about this skeet today as I near the end of the American Revolution unit in my US History classes.
So ironic that a movement that named themselves after the Boston Tea Party ended up electing their own King George III.

I can't help but notice that this update from NBC implies that the most despicable part of this shooting is the "anti-ICE messaging" while simultaneously calling the victims of the shooting the "'WORST of the WORST' criminals."

This seems to me like a dereliction of journalistic duty.

Live your life in such a way that if you're ever killed, people won't wonder whether it was done by the people you persecuted or the people who thought you didn't persecute enough.

Really wanting to see a reporter ask him "People are saying you're dead and celebrating, how does that make you feel?"

I love this for them.

Being proud to go down in history for having your commencement turned into a fascist rally.

Watching my son play and wishing I was a 3 y.o. too so I wouldn't have to live like Cassandra.

Today, a student asked if they could use AI to help them understand a source. It was a large online record of a tribunal and included many expandable subheaders. I asked them: what exactly would you do? Feed the entire text of the source to the AI? And then what?

Given my views on AI, imagine my chagrin when I found out one of my sisters-in-law used AI to help her write her toast at the other one's wedding. Like, you had to outsource your thinking to come up with a speech about your baby sister?
Even as our Ed institutions try to come up with policies with acceptable use cases, I tend to disagree with them. Even asking AI to help with mechanical tasks like brainstorming and outlining a paper is detrimental. The point is to organize your thinking. If you ask AI, then it's not your thinking.

As a teacher, I constantly discourage my students from using AI. I've already seen how it makes students lazy, diminishes their ability to think critically for themselves, and atrophies their reading comprehension.

Me to my 3.5 y.o.: we can go upstairs and watch videos for a bit. I want to be warm in bed.

3.5 y.o.: But we need to shovel snow.

Me: I know, and you're my only motivation to go outside

3.5 y.o.: Yes. We're snow plows. I'm the baby snow plow and you're the daddy snow plow.

Just got my 3 y.o. out of bed and had this conversation with him:

Me [to his stuffed animal]: how did you sleep?

3 y.o.: he can't answer because he is a stuffed animal

Me: Oh ok, I see.

3 y.o. [in a falsetto representing the stuffed animal]: I slept well!

Welp. My 3 y.o. just taught me a new word in Spanish (vertedero = trash dump) and I'm both super proud and embarassed.

3 y.o.: uno, dos, tres. . .

Me: que estas contando? (What are you counting)

3 y.o.: estoy contando números (I'm counting numbers)

Got me there buddy.

Getting gas at $2.86/gal in my DC metro area hometown. Why don't I ever see election coverage about low gas prices under Biden? /rhetorical

I just can't see how this keeps happening without it signifying an unambiguous Harris win next week. Still can't take anything for granted though.

A colleague of mine said today "the problem with the Democrats is they've forgotten how to speak to the working class" and I just *gestures wildly at rising minimum wages and labor union wins*

When my wife and I got married almost 12 years ago, we had our honeymoon in the Philippines and tried halo-halo, their national desert. October is Filipino-American History Month so I decided to see what local Filipino places existed. When I saw a photo of their halo-halo on yelp, I had to try it.
