I haven’t posted for quite awhile. I find the current situation beyond words. But here is a selection from a long poem I am working on called Dead Languages.
Hegel’s statement that the particular is not grounded in philosophy. The smell of pine duff on the forest floor. Poetry, let’s say, is language compressed, ideally to the point of explosion. This could all have been quiet lyrics contemplating time. And yes, it all falls apart, and yes, it connects only by the accident of proximity, and yes, it has all grown more dim, and yes, the grasses blur in the fields, and yes, the birds have become shaped shadows sweeping across a less vivid sky, and yes, I have lost much and am losing more, and yes, I find silence more comforting than the drone of my own words. and yes, I am growing, have grown, old, and no my courage was never equal to my vision. The world has grown worse than my darkest dreams.

I thought I would post this poem. Victoria Amelina was a Ukranian poet and novelist who was researching Russian war crimes. She was killed in a restaurant in Kramatorsk in 2022 when it was hit by a Russian missle. I did not know her but I had followed her on Twitter. Her death was a blow.
Because only this cry of hers Holds all those swallows in the air V. Amelina trans by Uilleam Blacker Victoria Amelina, sharing a pizza with friends was crushed by brick when a Russian missile struck the parlor. See, the swallows are no longer in air because she is no longer there to sing, their feathers gray with dust and ash.
