A useful Lanky word was 'oo'. Overheard on a bus, circa 1975:

'Oo did oo? Oo'd have thought it of oo?'

'oo' has four meanings in this sentence:

'Oh did she? Who would have thought it of her?'

My grandmother, a cotton weaver, used the phrase 'stopped for bobbins' if she couldn't do a task for lack of a pre-requisite.

40 years later my sister, s textile designer, uses the same phrase.

If you see 'it' and can afford 'it' then grab 'it'. Whatever 'it' is.

Writing my MA dissertation proposal. Bemoaning the fact that full citations have to go in footnotes, early modern sources have such long titles (as does historical literature in general) and that footnotes count towards the word count...

So according to the newspaper, 'recent research' has found that Pepys was 'harmful, abusive and exploitative' towards women. Having just re-read a fair chunk of his Diary, I'm not convinced the evidence was hard to find.

If someone managed to get a paper out of that recently then fair play...

Just calculated how much I've spent on history books in 2025. Need to lie down for a bit now.

Granddaughter wants to play 'St Nicholas'. Apparently she has lots of money and I have to go to sleep.

Sounds fair to me.

Our blogging prompt for October 2025 is #OnePlaceTimelines. Have you used timelines to highlight gaps in your knowledge, to better understand your #OnePlaceStudy place or its people, or to present OPS information? If not, try out timelines. And do share your experiences! #OnePlaceWednesday
