The Italian streaming service hosting the series admittedly has some irritations, even after doing this for 5 years. (Has anyone told them about playlists?? Or how subtitles should be positioned onscreen, FFS?!?) But it’s still worth totally worth the ~US$35.

ICYMI the Pordenone silent film festival is underway, and folks like us who can’t teleport there can get in on their streaming edition. Films from day 2 are still online (for a bit), so if you carpe diem you’ll not have missed much. Recommended! www.mymovies.it/ondemand/gio...

As the article says, this particular Seven Gables was in Seattle. See the link. (Not sure there ever was one in Portland, but maybe I’m mistaken.) Sorry you didn’t like King of Hearts as a child. I wouldn’t call it boring, but it’s not really a children’s movie. cinematreasures.org/theaters/12068

RIP to local cinema legend Randy Finley. Before there was a Seven Gables theater chain in Seattle there was The Movie House at 1403 NE 50th St., also founded by Randy. He ran it until the late 70s when Paul Doyle took over and renamed it The Grand Illusion.

If someone’s not mourning the death of Robert Redford in a manner that’s consistent with your views, make sure you set up a database, call their employer, and get them fired.

For most Americans, the date 1913 means nothing. For Americans on the far right fringes, 1913 has long been a date of great significance. Here’s a piece from the antisemitic rag “American Mercury” in 1957, for example. One of their writers at the time was George Lincoln Rockwell.

If Elon keeps heading the direction he is, then Twitter will just become a frictionless vector of evidence-free right wing propaganda like Gab or Truth Social...and the majority of people like me who have no interest in occupying a space like that will stop spending time here.

I’ve heard other Curtiz cognoscenti use the “fez” homophone. One pronunciation clue is probably that at age 19 in 1905, while still living in Hungary, he took the name Mihály Kertész. He adopted Michael Curtiz when he came to the US in 1926 to work at Warner Bros.

Carl Laemmle Sr. was particularly incensed by the use of classical music in the movie. Incest, necrophilia, drugs, Satanism, and flaying…but oh god, not classical music!
