What happens if your nostalgia was shattered?

@robinjss.bsky.social argued that “games-on-games” means inserting new mechanics - or a twist - into an old looking game… leading to surprising and shocking gameplay.

#Nostalgia, via #games, can generate new experiences instead of just emulating them.

The game never ends. Character sheets, props, maps, are “remnants of play” (RoP).

Preserved games & consoles give a slice of the past; RoP cues us into why ppl stopped/continued playing.

@doktornick.bsky.social: RoP are often “donations & not deliberate collections”. Big part of play/er history!

#MarkFisher locates the “eerie” in everyday settings. #TTRPGs, esp #WarHammer ‘s eerie, empty towns? Unlived but clearly once a home.

@rosgakori.bsky.social argued this gets players to engage with, and hopefully, critique history. Also, the “Empire” is temporary both in the game and the real-world.

What does nostalgia look like? At a talk I gave today at Tampere University’s OASIS lab, #nostalgia was a collection of leaves marked by people’s definitions. 🍁

They passed their leaves to others, and received a new set; if they agreed— fold once— if they did not — crumple ‘em up!
