The marketing failure that's going to kill us all
The marketing failure that's going to kill us all
Nearly half of Americans still don't view climate change as a major threat. Can a better marketing job persuade them to save the planet?

New England's apple harvest has been a bust and the reason goes back to an early spring frost and the implications of climate change.

Today on Volts: storing electricity as heat! It's so... hot right now. I talk with the head of a company making a thermal battery that can store renewable energy as heat & release it as either heat or electricity. It involves a glowing rock. Love this one.

Reading this and it's convincing me further for the need to manage solar radiation. The short-term destruction of runaway heating will be so catastrophic it's worth the cost, and even some risk to limit it.

The first global temperature data is in for the full month of September. This month was – in my professional opinion as a climate scientist – absolutely gobsmackingly bananas. JRA-55 beat the prior monthly record by over 0.5C, and was around 1.7C to 1.8C warmer than preindutrial levels.

Using olivine to remove carbon from the atmosphere? Only if mining and transporting don't put as much carbon in the air as it will remove. A the claimed rate if 41KWh per ton, it pencils out.

Could We Artificially Dim the Sun Prevent Global Warming?
Using geoengineering techniques, the climate could theoretically be artificially influenced and cooled. Scientists from Bern have now explored the feasibility of halting the melting of the West Antarc...

Hydrogen is extremely sus because most of it comes from fossil fuels at this point. And we're a decade away from having any kind of significant infrastructure to support passenger vehicles. EV infrastructure is already here.

There is no scenario where we meet emissions targets without politically defeating the fossil-fuel giants and their servants in government and culture. Exxon defrauded all of us and should be nationalized as it owes us the entire value of the company.

I'm intrigued by this idea of a Carbon Take-Back Obligation to require carbon producers to store the amount of carbon they release. It puts the onus on the producers to either stop releasing carbon, or to recover and store an equal amount.

It is remarkable that CO2 removal, which has yet to be shown to work at any achievable scale, gets so much press while solar radiation management, which–modulo its various side effects–is almost guaranteed work to ameliorate the worst effects of CO2 emissions, remains a fringe topic of discussion
