Reminds me of the Charles Stross novel where the villain uses a geas powered by Bond movies to infect any government attempts to stop him with the tropes of those movies.

I had one of those once. I was supposed to use it to make a temperature sensor that could tell when the dirt was warm enough for cicadas to wake up.
