The Mother in autumn practices Selfishness. She releases leaves, allows last year's harvest to die and fade She's hunkered, a cat under blankets, round, and still, and waiting, and alone. She's not offering apples, no rosy raspberries, no fresh green grass to run upon. She's empty of bugs and butterflies, bereft of tadpoles and salamanders. Snails hide. Nematodes creep to develop deep within musty soil, kept as a cuddled gift to her heart. She doesn't share. She curls. Mother knows it's ok to have selfish periods, releasing all, quieting all, keeping, not sharing, holding, not offering. She pushes into her own: Being, deep roots, surprisegrowth, willing luna moths to prepare for…later. Just told the ultrasound tech that I'm one of her few people today who are delighted they _aren't_ pregnant, so my "stressed about medical test=absolutely no filter" portion of the brain is definitely working.

A nearly two foot tall Godzilla figure (from Godzilla v Kong if it matters to you) with pink detail scaling all along his back. He is sitting in the pass through between Birdie's kitchen and living room. On three of his large spikes sit said tiny Santa hats from the previous pictures. The dog thinks he's hiding from me. Because he's brown and on brown. He's not hiding. But he will continue to think he is because I'm too tired to go drag him inside, at this exact second, while in my pajamas.

When it happened and I didn't die, at least not, with any permanence, I faced my own confused future with a grin, each year becoming a trophy to set upon shelving and dust, it being award for exceeding expectations- that thing at nineteen I thought perhaps could not, at twenty five considered impossible, at thirty two knew would be cut short. It is an odd thing, to trespass upon your own grave, sit down within it, kick your legs at the edge, measure a bit- have I grown since last Death and I had our ongoing danced coy flirtation? We lie down together, we two, caress each other's limbs, become acquainted with one another's sallow cheekbones. We are friends, beloved, and yet I refuse their advances, daily, prolong the anticipation of our eternity embrace. I have so many words piled upon one another, plied upon digital notebooks, struggling to be birthed into a world of lies and trauma, each poem a gift of relentless doomed optimism, that they alone can tightrope the chasm between myself and my future captor.
