For all my extra gifted 80's and 90's kids who are discovering they are tired, burned-out adults:
Ordinary

My love, what if you
were not Nietzsche and I was not
Gloria Steinem. And I was not
Ruth Bader Ginsberg, or Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, and
you were not
Isaac Newton, or Einstein, or Hegel, and we lived
Ordinary lives, here and there,
foraging for mushrooms in the swamps
and children's minds and sometimes find
ing chickory root for inflammation,
poke for lymphatic tincture, honey
for mead. What if sometimes you
sang in the kitchen while making bone broth
from chicken feet, and played happy
snippets on the violin, and I
periodically baked bread in a clean
(ish) kitchen, sang Broadway, laughed, and
sometimes, we held hands in the grocery,
took kids to the Asian market, watched
Netflix with our eyes closed, spooned
in bed, and weren't the next
Nobel Prize Winner, breakout academic
Wunderkind, surprise New York Times
Best-selling magical fairy child.
What if we went wild: Mowed lawns.
Got mail. Refused to live
up to the potential somebody wrote
on our report cards long ago, and instead
utterly wasted our lives
on loving and living and loving
and refused to yield to the expectations
that anything less fiscally responsible
is imprudent. What if what we saved
did not end up being millions,
my sweet, but our own souls? And all along
there will be enough for the movies
sometimes, enough for croissants and
soft pretzels, and enough to sit
and do the crossword and kiss you goodnight.
What if instead of being
memorable, we make memories,
responsible to not the whole world
but our world. And what if it is ordinary, and
we are inordinately enough.

rereading a novel from the 50s set in the 30s and i know this passage did not hit as hard when i first read it in the 90s as it does now
Photo of a passage from "The Watch That Ends the Night"

Jerome stopped and stared at me with incandescent eyes.

"Try and understand this-the fascists have brought back tor-ture, and torture calls for martyrs. And what else is fascism but the logical product of the capitalist system?"

"What do you mean—torture calls for martyrs?"

"Simply this. Unless a man is able to stand up and look the torturer in the eye and say, 'I'm not afraid,' torture becomes the way of the world. It's as simple as that."

"Is it really as simple as that?"

"No." He shook his head impatiently. "No, because underneath it all is the plain economic exploitation of a rotten world.
The communists are the only people who understand that. How can you pretend they're not one hundred percent right when they say that at a time like this the life of a single individual isn't worth a snap of the fingers? Wasn't Debs right when he said that so long as there was a soul in prison he wasn't free?

What does a single marriage count in a balance like that? It isn't easy being me. I know what all this means. [Highlighted sentence:] This evil inside the human animal-the fascists are charming it out like a cobra out of its hole and the capitalists let them do it because they think it's good for business. You think I'm abandoning Sally by leaving for Spain. I tell you, if I don't leave for Spain then I really do abandon her to a future of fascism and concentration camps."

Bray is a historian at Rutgers who received death threats after landing on Turning Points USA's Professor Watchlist. As a result, he announced he was moving to Europe. And then this happened.

This kind of harassment and abuse of scholars is Charlie Kirk's legacy and it's only getting worse.

We got our boarding passes. We checked our bags. Went through security. Then at our gate our reservation ‘disappeared.’

This is getting wild.

The states of Iowa, Montana, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and 14 others have just asked for permission to file THEIR amicus brief in IL v. Trump.
The States of Iowa, Montana, Oklahoma, South Carolina and 14 additional States
respectfully move for leave to submit the attached amicus curiae brief in support of Defendants
and their opposition to Plaintiffs’ requested temporary restraining order and preliminary
injunction. Proposed amici are States with a vested interest in federalism, the relationship between
States and the federal government, and deploying the National Guard. We also each have a vital
interest in supporting the President and Congress in enacting and enforcing valid immigration
laws. Every State has a responsibility to protect our citizens.
The federalization of States’ National Guard units is a matter of profound public
importance, as it directly implicates the delicate balance of power between state and federal
governments—a true cornerstone of Federalism. States generally maintain authority over their
National Guard units, allowing governors to deploy them for state-specific needs, such as disaster
response or public safety. Federalization of state National Guard units without gubernatorial

Lessons from Cats for Surviving Fascism by Stewart "BrittleStar" Reynolds
#BookSky #amreading
Cover for Lessons from Cats for Surviving Fascism by Stewart "BrittleStar" Reynolds, an ivory to oatmeal cover with red yarn lines creating a dog's head silhouette, while the titular black cat loafs, one paw extended to hold the yarn ball 'eye' of the dog. The author's name is at the bottom in red. The title angles around the dog's snout. It's simple, timeless, crisp, engaging.
