My parents never gave me grief for carrying that bag around, for being upset about its loss, or for wanting to go to lost and found for it (in fact, that part was their idea). And that’s how I made it to 40 years old before I was diagnosed as autistic.

Sometimes I still think about the person that found a bag full of gold nuggets at the sea lion and walrus show.

We only realized how bizarre and hilarious it was when they asked me to describe the bag and its contents. Y’all, it was literally filled with rocks painted gold and nothing else. The lost and found people said they’d call if it showed up. They never did.

The next weekend, we went to sea world and I insisted on bringing my unicorn duffel full of gold nuggets. After we watched the sea lion show, I realized I’d stored my bag under the seat and forgotten it there. It was gone when we searched for it. So we went to the lost and found.

When I was around 7, my dad thought it would be fun for my brother and me if we all gathered some rocks and spray painted them gold. We pretended we were rich after finding dozens of gold nuggets. I stored a bunch of them in my miniature duffel bag with the unicorn on it.

Also congrats on your shower! I know how hard they can be and how amazing it feels to get it done.

The other day I tripped and fell in my apartment and realized I caught it on my security camera. I thought it would be hilarious to watch it back and it was actually just really scary and sad. Oops.
