They will not be enticed by 'honeyed words'.

The DUP has been forced to issue a press release distancing itself from Ian Óg Paisley who says that while he feels that the case has not yet been made, he is now open to discussion on the reunification of Ireland. 😶

Rather more oversubscribed than the priesthood.

I read an article somewhere that suggested that philosophy graduates did better in business than MBAs. Obviously a class element: those with the opportunity to study phil or the confidence to take a 'useless' degree may have other advantages no priced in. Still.....

When I was at secondary school in Ireland in the 70s we all did Latin. I figure it was just in case one of us had 'a vocation'. UG at uni is the same; a tiny proportion will go on to a PhD and thus ensure the survival of the institution.

Irish living in Britain (not London). One of the big culture shocks is just how normal and undramatic buying a house is for anyone who is averagely solvent.

If she's elected, she'll have something to talk to Starmer about, should they meet. It certainly won't be socialism.

Discovered recently she's a Leeds graduate - where I teach.

“The idea that the Government could go into this Budget and offer no direct cost-of- living supports to people who are struggling to keep their heads above water is extraordinary. It tells us how far removed this Government is from the lives of ordinary people.

Dublin to Derry airlink? What about, you know, a train?

MM as Ted, Gavin as Dougal, Ó Cuiv as Jack.

I wouldn't be surprised if his leader has felt similarly singular addressing a home counties Tory do.

By 1922, the British had infested about a quarter of the world's land mass and forced its rule over 1 in 4 people globally. Bit late to be expecting white faces to dominate the emptying husk of your empire. The best part left is the richness of your people.

Ah, yeah I know - but the idea that public money might be used to support artistic practice at this level isn't entirely new. The basic income model is. I was partly responding to a Scottish poster who pointed to a similar scheme to the CES there.

Yes. Brings us back to arrogance.

Unintended consequence maybe of running someone who had never held, or run for any office before. Oireachtas members and I imagine councillors have to declare this kind of stuff.

Grangegorman used to be similar when we moved there 30 years ago. You turned off the NCR and onto a country road. No more.

There was also an allowance for training, which fairly directly started me on the, ahem, 'journey' that got me to where I am now. So it kinda worked.

Yeah, it's been presented as something entirely new in Ireland, but in the early 90s I spent a few years on a community employment scheme in Dublin where, in return for a minimal commitment to a particular project, I was free to work on my own stuff without the dole bothering me and to earn on top.
robertdallasgray.com
we actually had something like this at one point, although sort of covertly. the Fuse scheme in the late 90s/early 2ks allowed artists to claim benefits for a couple of years without being bothered by the dole office -- you just had to periodically 'sign in'

We need this in Scotland. It’s not even wishful or fanciful thinking: it’s financially astute. Our creative industries are absolutely vital

When I see the rest of the world fawning over the Irish government for something they've done, in this case making the basic income for the arts permanent, which is undoubtedly a good thing, I do feel the need to point out that they're a bunch of shites who don't make a habit of doing good things

Maybe, but voters in their 30s-50s are the core of any democracy, and they're exactly the ones who will never forget. It's like civil war politics for the 21st century.
