This is a NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) image from the James Webb Space Telescope of the "Cosmic Cliffs" in the Carina Nebula. The image is dominated by textured formations of gas and dust in warm tones of orange, brown, and gold, resembling a rugged cliff face. Two observations of a portion of the galaxy NGC 628 are split diagonally, with Webb’s observations at top left and Hubble’s at bottom right. The galaxy’s core is roughly centered and the galaxy’s arms appear to rotate counterclockwise. The spiraling filamentary structure looks somewhat like a cross section of a nautilus shell. In Webb’s image, the spiny spiral arms are composed of many filaments in shades of orange, with prominent dark gray or black “bubbles,” and there is a blue haze near the core. In Hubble’s image, the spiral arms are a mix of bright blue star clusters, pink star forming areas and dark brown dust lanes, and the core is a pale yellow. Two observations of the galaxy NGC 1300 are split diagonally, with Webb’s observations at top left and Hubble’s at bottom right. The galaxy’s core is centered, connected to a prominent diagonal bar structure. The galaxy’s two distinct spiral arms begin at the end of the bar and rotate counterclockwise. Together, the arm and bars form a backward S shape. In Webb’s image, the bar and spiral arms are composed of many filaments in shades of orange, and are anchored by its central region, which is circular and light yellow. In Hubble’s image, the spiral arms are a mix of bright blue star cluster and dark brown dust lanes, and the bar and core are a pale yellow. Two observations of the galaxy NGC 1512 are split diagonally, with Webb’s observations at top left and Hubble’s at bottom right. The galaxy’s core is centered and circular, with two prominent dust lanes crossing the large diagonal bar structure appearing toward the top left and bottom right. The central bar is blue at top, looking like a gap until a closer examination shows it feeds a larger, oval shape that looks braided with many spiral arms. In Webb’s image, the spiral arms are composed of many filaments in shades of orange. In Hubble’s image the bar is a light pinkish-brown and the spiral arms are a mix of bright blue star clusters and dark brown dust lanes. Two observations of the galaxy NGC 3351 are split diagonally, with Hubble’s observations at top left and Webb’s at bottom right. The galaxy’s core is centered and the galaxy’s arms rotate clockwise and form a distinct outer ring. In Hubble’s image, the galaxy’s roughly horizontal bar structure is a pale yellow and the spiral arms are a mix of bright blue star clusters and dark brown dust lanes that form half of the large circular ring. In Webb’s image, the spiral arms form the other half of the large ring, which is made of many filaments in shades of orange. They are anchored by its central region, a hazy blue bar, connected to the central core. The core has a small orange oval around a more circular light yellow oval, with a blue dot at its center.

Released from Hubble a few days ago - the image shows a giant among galaxies LEDA 1313424 or, the Bullseye.

A smaller blue dwarf galaxy went through the centre leaving 9 star filled rings.

Like dropping a pebble into a pond!

Spiral galaxy NGC 613 and the search for the progenitor of SN 2016gkg. Pockets of star formation are visible as green nebulas of gas in this near-infrared and visible image. The galaxy's bar is quite distinct and completely within the bounds of the image, but much of the outer arms are not included. I will mark the approximate position of the supernova with a Flickr annotation. I find the circumnuclear ring of star formation to be especially beautiful in this image, though you'll have to zoom in to see it clearly. I spent a good number of days working on this, which feels incredibly slow compared to the pace I've been keeping with the single filter (grayscale) images of galaxies from the past couple of months. There were a whole lot of cosmic rays to deal with, and I did my best, though there are still a few hiding here and there. I bumped up the saturation a good bit along with the clarity and dust texture of the nucleus. Data from the following proposal were used to create this image: The Progenitor of Supernova 2016gkg Red: ACS/WFC F814W Green: ACS/WFC F606W Blue: ACS/WFC F435W North is 25.19° counter-clockwise from up.

Another Hubble magic to end the week! 🔭

This is the N44 nebula in the LMC, located 160,000 light years away. A *lot* of massive stars are born inside this nebula!

It is also one of my favourite images that I processed 😊

This infrared color image shows the supernova remnant IC 443. Its shell-like form has two halves that have different radii, structures and emissions. The larger northeastern shell, seen as the violet-colored semi-circle on the top left of the supernova remnant, is composed of sheet-like filaments that are emitting light from iron, neon, silicon and oxygen gas atoms and dust particles heated by the blast from the supernova. The smaller southern shell, seen in a bright cyan color on the bottom half of the image, is constructed of denser clumps and knots primarily emitting light from hydrogen gas and heated dust. The color differences represent different wavelengths of infrared emission.

Five galaxies appear close to each other in the sky. At upper left, a spiral galaxy is tilted, appearing wider than it is tall. It has a glowing yellow center and reddish-brown dust trails that spiral clockwise around it. Above the center is a large elliptical galaxy. Its round, glowing yellow center is surrounded by a fuzzy yellow halo that fades away from the core. Toward the bottom right are three galaxies that appear to touch. The largest is in the center: a nearly vertical, edge-on spiral galaxy. Its glowing yellow core is mostly obscured by reddish-brown dust trails dotted with blue stars. Here is my latest astro image; ~44 hours exposure showing the majestic barred spiral galaxy NGC 1365 located in the southern constellation of Fornax at a distance of 56 million light-years: www.rolfolsenastrophotography.com/…/Galax…/i-QVPs5Vq Visible in this deep image are several faint streams extending out from the main arms, especially along the Western and Southern edge of the galaxy (3 to 6 o'clock position). These may be remnants of mergers with smaller dwarf galaxies or perhaps structures within the spiral arms themselves. The galaxy is significantly larger than our own Milky Way, with the two main spiral arms spanning up to 200,000 light-years. The symmetrical arms curve around the entire galaxy forming an almost ring-like halo. Together with the prominent central bar the arms outline an elegant Z, making NGC 1365 one of the most striking and beautiful galaxies in the sky. Bright knots of young star clusters and red emission nebulae dot the entire galaxy, and in the centre dark dust lanes trace around a cosmic maelstrom. The active nucleus of NGC 1365 hosts a supermassive black hole with the mass of approximately 2 million solar masses and rotating near the speed of light. In the background the entire field of view is littered with distant galaxies of various sizes and shapes. Many of these can be seen through the spiral arms and tidal streams of NGC 1365.
