It's one thing when it's an on-cam live-action personality. They're fallible, they're flawed -- especially given certain high-profile train wreck personalities. But a cartoon character is more stylized, someone that it is easier for people to look up to. To connect to.

I think there is a strong parasocial element to it as well, a certain dopamine hit that comes from watching the funny cartoon character playing the video game acknowledging you. This is further enhanced by the seeming unreality of vtubers being funny cartoon characters in how they present themselves
