We had the northern lights here in south-central Texas last night! My first time seeing them.

I'm THRILLED.

Update: It's coming along!

I used alcohol markers to color the skulls a more natural shade and gave them some bloody decorations/wounds.

I'm in the process of getting the heddles on, then I can FINALLY start weaving. (Seriously, 80% of weaving is just... getting it all set up.)

Several of the skulls have painted wounds and battle damage on them; one has an axe wound while others have spear damage. They are all strung with synthetic sinew. They sit on a desk mat that is a map of Middle-Earth and there is a vibrant rainbow keyboard behind them. A close-up of three of the skulls. It is in the process of having heddles added. The yarn is a mottled red, VERY reminiscent of entrails, and the ends of the warp threads are braided to prevent tangling. The skulls are being used as weights and are partially visible, peeking out from behind the warp threads. A shuttle loaded with artificial sinew is resting in front of and on top of the braids.

I have entered a very serious competition with the aforementioned academic paper. Of course, I cannot resist the opportunity for a visual shitpost.

My display on the day: I'm recreating the Valkyries' weaving process with (fake) entrails, skulls, and so on. It's gonna be a friggin' DELIGHT.
A collection of nine plastic skulls, all about two inches in diameter, with long nails driven through them at various angles. A collection of long, red, chenille-like yarn. The threads are arranged in braids and look a bit like entrails. A tabletop warp-weighted loom in the midst of being set up for weaving. The warp threads are looking VERY... biological. The two yarns being used for the project; the warp is described as "blood red" (and being made from entrails) while the weft is "corpse blue."

I just finished writing an academic paper on the linguistic and poetic challenges faced by translators working on the Darraðarljoð, a delightfully gruesome poem about the Valkyries.

And in true fashion, I could not resist the opportunity for a bit of wordplay.

Science-adjacent attorney! I have a (very old) astronomy paper published in 2001.

I do a LOT of historical fiber arts-related research and love digging into the nitty-gritty of different fibers - tensile strength, micron count, crimp, etc.

Follow for space, fiber arts, & experimental archaeology.
A conical wooden drop spindle from Scotland, called a dealgan. It has loose, unspun flax fiber coiled around it artistically. A Turkish-style tiny drop spindle with extremely fine wool-silk blend spun on it. The wool is a rich royal purple and the silk is white. Homegrown flax, harvested and standing in sheaves. There are several sheaves visible and they are drying out in a barn with a concrete floor. brief glimps of the total solar eclipse experienced in Kerrville, Texas on 8 April 2024. The view has clouds partly obscuring the eclipse. A very thin crescent of the sun is visible.

A pair of earrings from Jabebo Studio. They are hook earrings with pendants on them. The pendants are of wonderfully detailed common ravens. The back side of the earrings. Parts of old cereal boxes are visible. The metal attachment points have "jabebo" (the name of the studio) etched on them. Inside of the display card shows part of the back of a cereal box that has been repurposed.

Got my fidget cube in the mail while we were on vacation and I LOVE IT. My mother (who has Parkinson's) actually really enjoyed playing with it, too.

On this International Cat Day, I'd like to honor our three living cats and the late, great, Gandalf the Grey Tabby. He held our clowder together.

Anyway, if folks would like to see photos from someone who actually lives here, I have a bunch. My wife and I are pretty sure we were the last people to sit on a particular bench in the city park, as we were there a half-hour before it closed July 3rd and then it was washed away 6 hours later.

We are fine. We had some minor flooding on the property -- namely, the ~20 ft of paved driveway between the road and the gate got washed out. But otherwise, no real damage to speak of.

The cats are fine, too, and survived the move. We are still getting settled into our new house.

Hey friends! We have been back in the States for almost three weeks now. And the town where we live -- Kerrville, TX -- has been all over the news because of the flooding we experienced on the 4th of July, literally 9 days after we got here.

Yeah. It's been a hell of a return.

Finally finished my first quilt! I had to take a year off following my foot surgeries. I had pieced everything together and had it all assembled, but then it had to wait. All that was left to do was the actual quilting and binding the edge.

Pretty happy with how it came out.
A square quilt. The center diamond consists of four squares with bold tropical patterns on them. Surrounding the center diamond is a bright red. There are four bands coming out of the middle in purple and teal. There is a blue square behind the center diamonds. The outer square is a grassy green. The binding on the edge is pumpkin orange. The quilting lines follow the design so that everything appears to radiate from the center.

[food] It’s a few days late, but I’m gonna really miss being able to get some top-quality pastries after we move. This year’s Valentine’s Day treat was a very light chocolate mousse on top of a praline-hazelnut biscuit (UK sense), filled with and topped with chocolate ganache.

This is to announce that my spouse and I are moving back to the US this summer. Not just the US, but Texas. We have a lot of dread surrounding this, unsurprisingly.

Why are we going back? Two parts: 1) huge visa screw-up (not our fault) and 2) my folks need help managing the ranch.
