Hilariously, my spouse and I recently moved back from ~49ºN (Paris, France) and I've previously lived in England (51ºN) and Ireland (53ºN), but this is the first time I've seen the aurora borealis! But we lived in cities in Europe and are now in rural Texas.

We even saw them down in Kerrville, Texas (30ºN latitude!). INCREDIBLE color.

We had the northern lights here in south-central Texas last night! My first time seeing them.

Why are they red? Oxygen atoms in the high upper atmosphere are having a dance party. Like, 100-240 miles up (the ISS is at 254 miles up, for reference!).
Red aurorae are less common and only occur during intense solar storms.
