Urgent research and action are required to mitigate the risks of environmental pollutants on birds.

While we know about the effect of veterinary drugs on vultures, there's not enough studies in India on other pollutants and the impact on various species and groups of birds.

Avian Archives is a project from team State of India’s Birds, aimed at digitising historical bird checklists, which can be made available on eBird.

You can contribute to this project too. Write to us, if you have old bird checklists with you!

The paper also compared their findings with the results from our SoIB 2023 report - the population variability data from this study matched SoIB report.

Brown Dipper, Plumbeous Water Redstart, White Wagtail have decline or rapid decline in SoIB.

The five species that are showing a decline are: Brown Dipper, Plumbeous Water Redstart, White Wagtail, Common Kingfisher and White-throated Kingfisher.

“With the rapid growth of eBird usage in India since 2014, a rich dataset has emerged,” said lead author Ashwin V.

“It's become possible to evaluate long-term trends in bird populations using detection, non-detection data collected by India’s vibrant birdwatching community.”

The study sets a benchmark for biodiversity assessments in the Global South, where resources for systematic surveys are limited. The methodology and approach developed for this report are expected to serve as a model for other countries with active citizen science communities.

What's concerning is that we do not have enough data to compute trends for four species:

Grey-headed Parakeet
Blossom-headed Parakeet
Nicobar Parakeet
Long-tailed Parakeet

This highlights the gap in the trends for these species, and the need for more ebirding to fill these gaps

Only two species are doing great, in our current trends - Alexandrine Parakeet and Vernal Hanging Parrot, both of which show a rapid increase in our annual trends from our SoIB 2023 report.

However, a small glimmer of hope from Steppe Eagle, which has shown stable annual trend, making it a Low priority species in SoIB 2023 report.

Can you think of any other endangered/threatened species which seem to give some hope of revival?

Let us know!

The three key grassland species, Great Indian Bustard, Leser Florican and Bengal Florican are critically endangered, and are "high priority" species due to their small population size and diminishing habitats.
