I’m assuming it’s “get the boats out to sea as far as possible” — but in seriousness in the event of a major disaster these big ships could end up being a supply lifeline for the city.

Today is one of my “legislative workdays” when I take leave from my regular job to spend all day doing legislative work! Spent the morning on a really interesting tour of @cunardline.bsky.social ‘s beautiful Queen Elizabeth cruise ship, learning all about their environmental systems #Seattle

Every day, the maritime community moves the world: safeguarding shores, connecting trade, powering economies, and protecting ecosystems. No matter how long you've spent in the industry, there is always still something to be amazed by: the complexity, the scale, the innovation, or the dedication.

I agree, it’s a huge problem. It’s extremely dangerous and a major threat to public safety. And also it’s just plain wrong. But I don’t know if it’s a problem state law can fix, that’s what California is trying to find out.

It’s difficult to find the words to express how our unit is feeling right now, but we’ll take a stab at it: shocked, disappointed, angry, gutted. @cascadepbs.bsky.social’s choice to eliminate long-form written reporting is a massive loss for our community in a critical moment. tinyurl.com/LayoffFund

I really wanted to do this bill in WA this session but after consulting with the AG’s office I basically got back a 100% it’s unconstitutional, *but* CA I think wants to put it to the test and Newsom makes a reasonable point, federal agents follow speed limits and other local laws…

L’shanah Tovah to all who celebrate the New Year tonight. May your new year be sweet 🍯🍎

Can we pass it? Probably. Can we get it to pass a court challenge that would force the feds to follow it? I’m being told no. But if California gets a favorable constitutional ruling, then 100% yes.

Interim for me usually means lots of meetings and emails, but sometimes it’s also something super fun and cool! It was an honor to read the proclamation making today Sue Bird Day statewide and to watch the unveiling of Sue Bird’s statue at @climatepledgearena.com ! #Seattle #Storm #GOAT

Cannot wait to hear people tell me that xyz city is not Paris…
staterepjuliareed.bsky.social
Unfortunately logistically that’s not really possible for me, given I have another full time job outside of being a legislator. But I try to be as available as possible and I appreciate all the folks who reach out!

I can't answer questions 2 and 3, but re: question 1 -- I know there were wage and labor guidelines put into the bidding process for the final contractor. But agree, big concerns.
staterepjuliareed.bsky.social
Really appreciate the expertise of Rep Janice Zahn on this committee, she's a legislator who also works at the Port so she knows a *lot* about these big expensive construction bid projects. #waleg

Lots of questions from the legislators about the Florida partnership. I would use the word skepticism. #waleg
staterepjuliareed.bsky.social
I have serious concerns about the viability of this partnership with a shipyard in Florida to do all of this work. I definitely wanted a WA builder to be chosen. But we're here now. #waleg

The first of these vessels is going to cost $405 million, though hopefully as we go along, we'll learn and get more efficient. $255 million of that is the cost of building and $150 million is the equipment needed to run the boat and the engineering services. #waleg

We are days away from putting the Wenatchee into service, the first hybrid electric ferry conversion in the fleet. 16 will be coming by 2040. #waleg

The House Transportation Committee is meeting today in Seattle City Hall! The TVW staffer is sick, so we're unfortunately not online but we're having a work session about the state of the WA ferries. #waleg

Probably not until this fall! But feel free to reach out to my office if there’s anything you want to chat about.
