Yes - I can only speak for SD, but western SD has more in common with WY than with eastern SD in a lot of important ways. If WY is Mountain West, so is western SD.

Yeah. The obvious challenge with these maps is that regions usually exist on a spectrum, and abrupt discontinuities are relatively rare. I wouldn’t have grouped myself with IN/OH, but I would have grouped myself with people who would have grouped themselves with IN/OH.

This gets something right that a lot of these maps get wrong.

I grew up in eastern SD. I felt a regional kinship with ND, NE, MN, and IA, and somewhat more weakly with WI and KS. I didn’t feel any regional kinship with CO/WY/MT.

Not exactly, but it’s close enough that I’ll accept it, especially if you weigh it by population.

Fundamentally, I grew up in the blue part of SD and I feel kinship with MN/WI and not with MT/WY, and everything else is extrapolated from that.
