The tourism and aviation industries are two sides of the same coin: a system built on neo‑colonial, fossil‑fuelled hypermobility, to maximise the profits of a few at the expense of people and the planet. 5/5
staygroundednet.bsky.social
3) Many countries in the Global South are pushed into dependence on mass tourism, while bearing the brunt of the climate crisis it fuels. 4/5
staygroundednet.bsky.social
2) Touristification means land grabs, precarious jobs, soaring rent prices and exploitation of local communities and migrant workforce, loss of public spaces and exhaustion of local resources (e.g. water scarcity). 3/5
staygroundednet.bsky.social
But this “freedom to travel” comes at a huge cost:
1) Aviation is the fastest-growing source of transport emissions and represents 52% of tourism direct emissions. 2/5
staygroundednet.bsky.social
Since 1970, international tourism has exploded, from less than 200 million arrivals to almost 1.5 billion today. This was only possible due to the even larger growth of aviation, with billions of passengers carried every year. 1/5
Since 1970, aviation has grown 15 times and tourism along with it. (Graphic showing booming growth of tourism and aviation since 1970)

Ban night flights, stop airport expansions.
We stand with communities in Ireland impacted by harmful night flights. Kids need adequate rest for their well-being.
They also need urgent climate action from aviation, to help protect their futures.🌎

Educate yourself to harms of aviation. #NATS vectoring exposes communities to unmonitored noise outside flight paths. These areas are outside official noise contouring assessments. Stop construction and expansion of airports, and degrow aviation. Frivolous emissions, in large part, in the face of a rapidly degenerating worldwide climate.

This means:
❌ Ecological destruction
❌ More air traffic & cruise ships
❌ Locals pushed out

Actually, a regulated downturn in cruise tourism is starting, in Hawaii's Dept of Transport's new draft plan to reduce transport sector emissions.

50% cut in cruise by 2030 (incl. 75% for ships >3000 passengers). By 2035, 75% cut overall & no ships >3000 pax.
