We are particularly happy to see this paper out. It has been in the making for a long time and was a large collaborative effort between postdocs, Phd students, and great colleagues in Gothenburg! @chloehbk.bsky.social @ciarangilchrist.bsky.social

Crosses between divergent-selected lines produced hybrids with reduced gamete viability and striking genome instability (lots more SVs), while parallel-selected lines remained largely compatible. This links ecological selection to the emergence of “intrinsic” genetic barriers.

We evolved yeast for 1000 generations in divergent and in parallel environments. At regular time points during experimental evolution, we made crosses within and between environments, and show that adaptation to different “ecological niches” can generate partial reproductive isolation.

We have a new paper out in Molecular Ecology, led by @devinbendixsen.bsky.social ! Reproductive isolation due to divergent ecological selection is accompanied by vast genomic instability in experimentally evolved yeast populations onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

It truly was! Next time, you should join us!

We’re still beaming from hosting illustrious guest for our workshop on yeast genomics and evolution in Sweden! Thanks to Gilles Fischer, @fcocubillosr.bsky.social @pablo-villa.bsky.social for sciencing, kayaking, walking, talking, beer tasting, and just generally making science as fun as it can be!

We are looking for candidates with a strong interest in evolutionary biology. Email me if you have any questions about the lab, work, and life in Sweden. Start date in negotiable. Btw, it's perfectly fine to apply if you completed your PhD more than 3 yeas ago!

Small correction: in the graphical abstract, that should be S. paradoxus, not S. cerevisiae! 🫣 🫠

Wild yeasts live in forests all around us but little is known about their roles in ecosystems. They can be used to develop new beer & bread flavors, but wild yeast can also serve as unique model for studying climate change. @stelkens.bsky.social @kawresearch.bsky.social
