Alas, the Venn diagram of “bad time to be a person who cares about things” and “most important time to be a person who cares about things” is a circle.

I’m heartbroken to learn that Jane Goodall passed away this morning.

As a primatologist and science communicator, I owe much of my career to Dr. Goodall. As a human being, I will always be grateful for her advocacy for animals and dedication to making the world a better place. 🌍🦍❤️

Anyone here skilled at identifying cicadas?

I found this cicada molting yesterday and had never seen one this size!

I’m located just outside of Atlanta and the last photo has a comparison of this one’s shell next to one the size I usually find.

The empty shell of the cicada from the other photos placed next to a smaller empty cicada shell on a green picnic table.

I’m honored to receive a Compassionate Connections Award from Letters to a Pre-Scientist!

LPS pairs students with scientist pen pals, facilitating some of the most important work we can do as scientists. I’m grateful to volunteer with an organization that shows students science belongs to them!

This is such an amazing story.

Glad #NIH could help you. Nothing gives us more energy and happiness than stories like this. 🧪

Thank you for sharing it, @stellamayerhoff.bsky.social

Oh, Stella from 14 years ago. You’re not allergic to everything. You have hereditary alpha tryptasemia syndrome.

No one knows it exists yet, but incredible scientists at NIH will discover it in a few years.

Their work will give you access to a diagnosis and medical care.

Circe says we're all set for tonight! She won't be able to join me, but I hear some friends are bringing their dogs.

Join us at Sceptre tonight at 7. Come with all your questions about animal behavior & science!

Orange and white cat lies on a blanket, paws extended, next to a laptop. She's looking at the screen, which shows a PowerPoint with the title How Do Our Pets Think? And How Do We Find Out? Logos for Stand Up for Science and Science for Georgia.

People say not to let their kids engage too much with media, and I agree, but quality is so important. I am who I am in large part because of the influences of Sesame Street, Mr Rogers, Reading Rainbow, Columbo, Star Trek, Beyond 2000, Connections, and NPR's Morning Edition.

HAPPY NEWS!!! 🎉

I TNR (trap-neuter-return) cats to help with the stray cat population in my neighborhood and just got a call that a cat I brought in has a microchip!

She’s been lost for a month and now gets to go home! 🥹

🚨PLEASE MICROCHIP YOUR PETS AND UPDATE YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION!!!🚨
Black and white cat with green/yellow eyes, a light pink nose, and white whiskers sits in a metal humane trap. She’s looking upward, away from the camera.
stellamayerhoff.bsky.social
I’ve been posting pictures and videos of her on various platforms, but no one reached out to say she was theirs. The microchip is what made all the difference!

📣 To those whose NSF grants have been terminated, check out this initiative:

"While it is impossible for private philanthropy to close the gap left by federal funders, we can provide modest grants to mitigate some of the impact on scholars, projects, and project teams."

Any 5th-8th grade #science teachers out there who would be interested in an awesome pen pal program? 📝

Applications to participate in Letters to a Pre-Scientist are open!

I've enjoyed connecting with my pen pals over cats & books, along with my science. #EduSky
