2. In the USA, which has similar access to capital everywhere, we see marketly different homelessness outcomes based on population growth and house building.

I think a good chunk of the milk prohibitions are due to Italian relative lactose intolerance. Having milk after a meal is going to be a bigger problem for the average Italian than the average Brit

Remember how quickly that "election"was tabulated?? Especially in those swing states? RECORD setting, in fact. Usually takes days. A week sometimes. Statistically impossible outcomes, too, right?? Remember that? I SURE AF DO.

Supply trutherism. It's only a 0.8% drop in prices because it's predicted to create only 0.5% of additional housing. The OBR draws a direct casual link between supply and housing prices.

RT from Threads £29,000 ($39,000) is the salary a Brit needs to bring their spouse to the UK under the law. That's a solid salary in Northern Ireland - where we would we be moving if we did it - just below the median. I get the aim to avoid draining public coffers, but it's also pretty blatant class discrimination

Many people have been saying that percentage change scales should be logorithmic. I think it's an excellent opportunity to use #ggplot2 dual axis capabilities to add a clarifying "times/fractional axis" to make the relationship clearer

Sorry to reopen a thread from 3 months ago, but I've been using this in work and I think adding a dual axis showing "times" and the fraction of the original helps make it clearer to people why the log scale is suitable. I've added the code I used to this github.

Great thread. The suddenness can be explained. When a queue is under stress, waiting time rises slowly and then quickly with this kind of hockey stick effect. That's because it goes from sometimes having capacity for new customers and sometimes not to never having capacity.

I loved this Dreaming Spanish update. Language learning opens doors.
1,366 hours, 2,000,000 words read, 170 hours speaking. I'm on day 3 of a 17-day trip to Spain. I have a conference in Madrid in a few days (in English), but I'm a union lawyer by profession, so I thought it would be fun to meet up with some Spanish trade unionists for May Day. I arrived that morning having been in touch with one person and expecting to march and maybe make some friends. Showed up at the protest running on three hours of in-flight-sleep and wearing a t-shirt. It turns out that they took my visit super seriously-I was asked to give two press interviews in Spanish, introduced to several government ministers (including the Second Vice-President), and generally given the red carpet treatment. An Argentinian attendee also let me try mate for the first time, which was just as much of a highlight. After the march, I was invited to a barbecue at a now-friend's house-ended the day with almost 9 consecutive hours between input and output. Now that I've had a chance to catch up on some sleep, I'm thinking about how, had I not decided to try DS in April of last year, none of this would have been possible. Legitimately the best on-a-whim decision I have ever made

They could do much with Duelling. The Irish upper class loved Duelling so much that they were specifically banned as seconds by English codes
The Duel, A History of Duelling by Robert Baldick Even more important than the wording of the cartel was the choice of a friend to deliver the challenge and act as a second, especially if it was hoped to avoid useless bloodshed. "There is not one cause in fifty', wrote the peaceable Bosquett, 'where discreet seconds might not settle the difference and recon-cile the parties before they came into the field'; while a famous fencing master was often heard to declare that 'it is not the sword or the pistol that kills, but the seconds'. All authorities were agreed that seconds should be men of experience and moral courage, justice and urbanity; and two authorities specifically debarred infidels and Irishmen - the former because, according to Brantôme, 'it is not proper that an unbeliever should witness the shedding of Christian blood, which would delight him,' and the latter because 'nine out of ten Irishmen have such an innate love of fighting that they cannot bring an affair to an amicable adjustment'. While it is unlikely that many infidels were invited to act as seconds in European duels, English travellers in Ireland frequently had to deal with native seconds and were usually extremely critical of them. Thus one English witness of a duel in Ireland later recalled that 'the Irish second was so exacting in the terms of a required apology, that nothing but abject cowardice could account for the acquiescence of the challenged party; and when, upon its being shown to the challenger, the latter pointed out that the word "apology" was misspelt, having two ps, the Irishman insisted that he was right, high words ensued, and the principal had the greatest difficulty in appeasing his wrath, which well-nigh rendered a meeting necessary'. Oh wow! I finally get it.

By the way, ggplot2 accepts functions as an argument for labels. So you can use

\(x) scales::label_percent(scale = 1)(x-100)

to avoid working out the breaks and labels manually. That might be more convenient for you in future.
