I know some people are cynical about everything now and just say “eh, what do you expect” at every new low, but really this is just astonishing and outrageous, and I don’t think we should shrug at that www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

Good point.

In China 22% of new trucks are electric, and this is said to explain part of the ca 11% decrease in diesel consumption

Just reflexively oppositional, YOU NEGOTIATED THIS DEAL! If you'd not held the election when you did, Rishi would have signed it. YOU WERE IN THE FOREIGN OFFICE AT THE TIME.
This is (1) disgraceful at a moment of national danger, (2) laughably unserious and (3) deeply unwise when the President is obviously becoming incapacitated and the most unpopular person in the whole UK. Utterly disqualifying.

I consider myself good at ggplot but this is something amazing that I didn't know
You can specify relative position in ggplot with I(x) I(y).

E.g. annotate("text", x = I(.5), y = I(.5), label = "hello!") will place the text in the middle of the plot.
This, combined with alignment arguments is like 87% of the magic for me.

We have so much good evidence for cash transfers but so many just refuse to accept that those in poverty can make good decisions.
Spoiler: They used the money just as wisely as anyone else would, and it's so frustrating that this still isn't a common sense assumption to make.

This is false. Deportations reduce housing demand, but they shrink housing supply even more as the construction sector loses workers. Trump's deportations will make housing less affordable.

December 25th. The day the Fellowship departs Rivendell to destroy the One Ring.

Whatever you celebrate, may you have the courage to take the first steps to defy and endure against the dark, and rekindle light into the world.

I read someplace that when INDECENT PROPOSAL came out a TV reporter, outraged at the concept, did some vox pops outside the theater, asking a woman "Would you sleep with Robert Redford for a million dollars?!" Only the woman without hesitation replied "I'd sleep with Robert Redford for fifty cents."

Fun take on this is that the net effect of IHT in the long run is to make sure all land is owned by corporations. Since corporations never die and thus never pay IHT they have a long run competitive advantage. Eventually no one will have direct land ownership at all.
