I checked my archived emails, and you're absolutely right. Five paragraphs in, they casually mention they're deleting everyone's data. This is how it appears on my phone (it doesn't, it's not even on the first screen).

I'm not sure if this makes the way they handled the shutdown better or worse.

Just to follow up on this, I tested it with a static controller method, and it works just fine.
