Black and white photograph of six kids playing in an open fire hydrant. I was riding my motorcycle through Detroit’s Brush Park neighborhood when I saw these kids playing in an open fire hydrant. I stopped and started photographing them. When they saw me, they stopped and spontaneously posed. It lasted just a few seconds before they went back to playing. This photo has been part of several juried art and photo exhibitions.

I’ve been going through old photos from the three weeks I spent studying photography in Italy in 2007. After recently reading Anthony Doerr’s “Four Seasons in Rome,” I started thinking about my own trip (only a couple of years after Doerr’s 2005-06 trip) and struck me how quickly I fell into a routine, heading most mornings to a little sidewalk cafe not far from my apartment in the seaside town of Sorrento. The cafe sat tucked in the corner along a curve of a narrow street, perfect for sitting with a cappuccino and a croissant and watching people going by. All these years later, a Facebook friend seeing my photograph I posted of the cafe interpreted the name of it, something I never bothered to do. Caffe’ Del Mar means Cafe by the Sea. How beautiful. How perfect.
