There must be a follow-on economic impact. The people earning up to £70k are surely most likely to spend nearly all the money they take home. The less we let them take home, the less they spend, so the pain gets passed on into the wider economy.

Pensioner pays 20-40p per £ on each pound over £50k income.

That's 2-3x as much. That's really not fair.

Starting at the top, Parliament is sovereign. It would be healthy if parliament would use its powers to de-prince him.

I say ownership. Throughout the difficult last decade FT has been owned by Nikkei, whose interests are in long term institutional credibility not driving a UK political angle. Much of the UK press, and private news media, owners have a strong personal political mission for their papers.

Compensation has to feel fair within society as a whole. Paying a relatively privileged cohort for poor communication while others face greater hardship does risk undermining trust that the system is fair. If the requirement to be fair undermines the ombudsman then that's a another problem.
