cheering myself up by imagining "red wine supernova" is about hot braless burnout milf ye baiyi from the perspective of a recently emancipated, sexually overwhelmed early-twenties xie'er

it IS, omg. like personally.... when i am being watched in silence with no noises or interjections at all, i start to panic and think the other person hates everything i'm saying. but for some folks that's the most polite way they know to show attention! we all need a sticker or something, god
stilloranged.bsky.social
yes and i love it!!!! picture us kermit nodding at each other
stilloranged.bsky.social
and to get real honest... the only people who've ever gotten upset or rude with me about active listening (like nodding, mmhmm, i know!) are white, non-poor, non-jewish people. my communication style is not WASPy, even though my face is. in my academic career this has caused some confusion.
stilloranged.bsky.social
but to be honest, i have spent most of my life around like. neurodivergent east-coast fast-talkers. conversations with my oldest friends are all a rapid mishmash of interjections and redirections and shorthand references to other older conversations and jokes. or there's a lot of mmhmm-ing going on
stilloranged.bsky.social
i just... cannot NOT participate in a conversation that i am deeply engaged in. i make affirmative noises, nod, and yes, jump in with supporting examples/context. i do try to do it respectfully, but it's easy for me to get carried away and blurt. i've gotten comfy with saying "sorry, please go on"

I know it’s not technically polite, but I love having a conversation with other people who are comfortable with short interjecting interruptions. To me it makes the conversation feel more like something we’re weaving together rather than alternating individual presentations. It feels more alive.

banning frankenstein in a frankenstein server is actually on-theme for this year i think

yes he's so traumatized he sees ghosts. but he's fine, really! because his wife can spiritually curbstomp them. ten out of ten characterization

best part of "flower of evil" is when hyunsoo is like "oh yeah didn't i tell you... my evil dead serial murderer father haunts me in hallucinations, but never when my ji-won is around, because he's terrified of her" the absolute terminal turbo-level wifeguyism

Equinox

by Barbara Crooker

Another October. The maples have done their slick trick
of turning yellow almost overnight; summer’s hazy skies
are cobalt blue. My friend has come in from the West,
where it’s been a year of no mercy: chemotherapy, bone
marrow transplant, more chemotherapy, and her hair
came out in fistfuls, twice. Bald as a pumpkin.
And then, the surgeon’s knife.
But she’s come through it all, annealed by fire,
calm settled in her bones like the morning mist in valleys
and low places, and her hair’s returned, glossy
as a horse chestnut kept in a shirt pocket.
Today a red fox ran down through the corn stubble;
he vanished like smoke. I want to praise things
that cannot last. The scarlet and orange leaves
are already gone, blown down by a cold rain,
crushed and trampled. They rise again in leaf meal
and wood smoke. The Great Blue Heron’s returned to the pond,
settles in the reeds like a steady flame.
Geese cut a wedge out of the sky, drag the gray days
behind them like a skein of old wool.
I want to praise everything brief and finite.
Overhead, the Pleiades fall into place; Orion rises.
Great Horned Owls muffle the night with their calls;
night falls swiftly, tucking us in her black velvet robe,
the stitches showing through, all those little lights,
our little lives, rising and falling.

there are lots of machine learning tools that are useful to historians (like pattern recognition datasets for researchers who have 5000 pot shards or glyphs to sort, lol). but not one that can fully replace even a single human research assistant!

i'm drunk at the lantern festival, telling high schoolers cool facts about the history of medicine. i am a teacher in my blood guts and bones and i will never be beaten by artificial anything

"historians" lmao eat shit. i've seen your work and there ain't no way you're replacing me. "passenger attendants" a computer is going to hand me a drink? a computer is going to do that? lying clownass bitches. Eat double shit

Microsoft have dropped a list of the 40 professions most threatened by AI. Your first instinct should be to dismiss it due to their mountains of interests in convincing the world that AI is more than horribly inept at most jobs

But on a second look, it's worse than that. Historians? Mathematicians?
I am sorry, but it's an image of a table. That's how it is being published.

beyond evil is like "here are two freaks. it's actually somehow incidental that one of them looks just like that unfathomably beautiful marble lucifer statue" but the devil judge is like "yes, we KNOW he is a beautiful soft-skinned crying baby. that is LITERALLY plot-relevant"

i made my class draw this week. first they were like "...why?" and then they got into it so hard i had to tell them 3x when class was over. their work was so goofy: dizzy eyes, purple hair, scribbly flowers. the idea of kids increasingly absorbing ai aesthetic as some kind of standard makes me ache
stilloranged.bsky.social
like. i was very "of course! sure. of course." at least it wasn't the donkey my mother has been visiting weekly at the SPCA all summer

good for you but blergh, jesus! what a system
stilloranged.bsky.social
yes, my cousin warned us about that! but i'll remind them, thank you

my dad had rabbits as a farm kid, and my cousin has rabbits, so they have like... some info, and people to ask. they're learning more on litter training and setting up half of the house for him to range loose. i think the rabbit is a lucky SOB. my parents drive ME nuts but they're great to animals
stilloranged.bsky.social
my parents adopted a rabbit???? they were like "you have a new brother! we pick him up tomorrow!!" and i was like "oh you finally got a dog?" and. nope
