But if I be I, as I hope it be, I’ve a little dog at home, and he’ll know me; If it be I, he’ll wag his little tail, And if it be not I, he’ll bark and wail.

The 1949 and 1959 Yotsuya Kaidan are the other classic versions...Tale of Oiwa's Ghost with Tomisaburo Wakayama is a kind of hard-boiled noir version directed by Tai Katô, who did some fucking great films... letterboxd.com/film/the-tal...

Illusion of Blood (1965) is a very good, faithful version of the story (maybe a bit slow) starring Tatsuya Nakadai, who just died, with a Toru Takemitsu score. That's probably the best one, to my mind. letterboxd.com/film/illusio...

Most of these particular films are retellings of Yotsuya Kaidan. There's even a tradition of visiting the author's grave before doing another version to avoid bad luck. Miike Takashi's Over Your Dead Body is one of the more interesting ones: letterboxd.com/film/over-yo...
Over Your Dead Body (2014)

Lots of crappy American directors seem to have ripped it off (Sophia Coppola most obviously), but this is pretty good (it's actually supposed to be a video game adaptation). The director has done some other interesting films too... letterboxd.com/film/fatal-f...

I wasn't a fan of Picnic at Hanging Rock, mainly because they forced us to watch it at school and I'm naturally averse to anything deemed to have educational value...but Kate had never seen it so we watched it and I think I have started coming around. But a musical version is a fucking nightmare.

Yoshida Yoshishige's 1988 version of Wuthering Heights is absolutely bonkers and is probably better than the book (which I have admittedly not read). When I was working on Gerald's song version of the final paragraph (in Hungarian) this was my main inspiration: letterboxd.com/film/wutheri...
Wuthering Heights (1988)

Kate points out it's actually a Neil Diamond song but I don't actually think I can tell the difference between them.

’I am' I said
To no-one there
And no one heard
Not even the chair

I think it's going to come out around April next year...I'm kind of planning to do a two-week kissatour, and organise going to jazz kissas and just playing the record. Seems like fun and no cost...I might have to pick your brains about good places to go...

That's a good title! Funnily enough, I'm doing a compilation for Calax Records. A couple of days before we had a meeting to discuss it, I dreamed we got together and decided to call it Denki Amma. In the dream they thought it was a really good idea, so when we had the real meeting I thought why not?

And it wasn't an extinct volcano; it was only dormant and could have blown up any old time. I kind of fantasise about it happening, now that I'm a safe distance away.

I mean, I grew up being taught to turn off the tap while I brushed my teeth so as to not waste water and we lived on the side of a volcanogenic lake. Is it surprising that I'm uptight about a few things?

I recently discovered that AI bots are inventing fictional details for the fake artists on my Dub Music from Rural Southern Australia 'compilation'. They're gradually developing independent lives. I'm pleased, really.
